Serbia Seeks BRICS Membership Amid Geopolitical Shifts

Serbia has formally applied to join the BRICS economic bloc, with Prime Minister Duro Macut confirming the nation's ambitions ahead of the alliance's 2025 summit in Rio de Janeiro. The MOVE comes despite Serbia's omission from this year's expansion that saw 13 nations granted 'Partner Country' status.

The Balkan state finds itself among 45 aspirant nations vying for BRICS membership, including 23 formal applications. This geopolitical maneuvering coincides with Belgrade's parallel pursuit of European Union accession, highlighting Serbia's balancing act between Eastern and Western spheres of influence.

BRICS operates on consensus-based expansion, leaving Serbia's fate dependent on unanimous approval from current members. The July summit will reveal whether the bloc prioritizes further enlargement following its recent growth spurt.
